Printing Quality and Options
All prints are produced on Epson 9880 giclee printers using archival inks guaranteed to last up to 75 years. Our printers create museum quality prints at a printing resolution of 1440 x 720 dpi.

What is a Giclee print?
From the French verb “to spray”, the word Giclee (gee-clay) is used to describe a digital fine art printmaking process. Giclee prints are created using a high-resolution digital printer. Images or paintings are carefully scanned and reproduced using very stable, pigment-based inks.

To begin, the actual painting is scanned on a flat-bed scanner. By using calibrated color-matching measurement tools the color is further refined. The printer matches the color of the original painting, using the original to judge the quality of the scan and produce artist’s proofs. Finally the artist signs off on the color match, the quality of the reproduction focus, and the brush stroke fidelity.

During the printing stage, canvas or paper is individually mounted onto a drum which rotates. As the drum spins, a fine stream of ink droplets spray onto the chosen archival substrate. Since no screens are used in Giclee printing, the prints have a higher resolution than lithographs and the dynamic color range is greater than serigraphy (silk screen print). The Giclée printer squirts approximately 4 million microscopic droplets of ink per second onto high quality canvas or 100% cotton fiber paper. The Giclée printing technique can produce up to 16 million colors for unequaled color fidelity.

Archival quality is always of concern to collectors and the artist. The Giclee process provides fade & color shift resistance of better than 125 years. Canvas Giclee prints may be framed and hung in a manner similar to oil paintings. Paper prints usually should be under glass to avoid the effects of humidity and air pollutants. With proper care, not unlike the care one would give a fine oil painting, a Giclee print will give lifetimes of enjoyment.
